Chapter 20: Understanding the External Causes of Morbidity (V00-Y99)

Chapter 20, which focuses on Understanding the External Causes of Morbidity (V00-Y99), has seen substantial changes this year. With a total of 123 updates, almost half of the new codes for this year fall under this chapter. The most extensive expansion pertains to foreign bodies, including batteries, plastic objects, glass items, magnetic and non-magnetic metal objects, organic and non-organic items, and sharp objects that enter natural orifices or penetrate the body. Some examples of these changes include:

W44.B3xA (First Occurrence), Plastic toy or toy part entering or passing through a natural orifice

W44.H0xA (First Occurrence), Unspecified sharp object entering or passing through a natural orifice

W44.F3xAF (First Occurrence), Food entering or passing through a natural orifice

W44.A1XA (First Occurrence), Button battery entering or passing through a natural orifice

W44.C0XA (First Occurrence), Unspecified glass entering or passing through a natural orifice

W44.H2XD (Subsequent Occurrence), Knife, sword, or dagger entering or passing through a natural orifice

Chapter 13 (M00-M99) – Diseases of the Musculoskeletal System and Connective Tissue

It has introduced 42 new codes to provide more precise classification for osteoporosis with pathological fractures. These codes aim to enhance the accuracy of coding and documentation.

Chapter 7 (H00-H59) – Diseases of the Eye and Adnexa

It has incorporated new codes covering conditions such as non-proliferative/proliferative sickle-cell retinopathy, specific eye muscle entrapment in cases of other strabismus, and foreign body sensation. Additionally, these changes include the inclusion of laterality to enable more precise coding for eye-related conditions.

Chapter 21 (Z00-Z99) – Factors Influencing Health Status and Contact with Health Services

It has been updated with 30 new additions and six deletions, primarily due to expanded diagnosis codes. The new codes encompass observations of newborns for suspected conditions that have been ruled out, carriers of Acinetobacter baumannii bacteria, encounters for prophylactic measures, family history of specific colon polyps, and non-compliance of caregivers. Furthermore, the Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) section has been enhanced with new codes for child custody and parental/adult-child conflict.

Notable final updates to the ICD-10-CM code set for FY 2024 include:

Chapter 6, covering diseases of the nervous system (G00-G99), which now includes 24 new codes.

Chapter 7, pertaining to diseases of the eye and adnexa (H00-H59), with 34 new codes.

Chapter 17, dealing with congenital malformations, deformations, and chromosomal abnormalities (Q00-Q99), now includes 22 new codes and six revised codes.
